Rainy season in Da Lat: what 35 years of records actually show

The rainy season here runs from May to October, and the phrase scares people more than it should: rain falls on 26–28 days a month, but it rarely rains all day. What matters for planning is not the total in millimetres — it is how many days carry rain, and that number drops in El Niño years, which 2026 is.

Expect rain on most days, not for most of the day

From May to October rain falls on 26 to 28 days a month. Locals plan around the afternoon: mornings are usually workable, the downpour comes later and passes. A day with rain is not a day lost — it is a day where the waterfall trip happens before lunch.

Look at September, the wettest month

September brings around 295 mm, the peak of the year, with the same 28 rainy days. July and August are wetter than the numbers suggest too, because the rain comes in heavy short bursts. February is the opposite pole: about 48 mm across four rainy days.

Adjust for El Niño, which is running now

In El Niño years the wet season is drier and warmer. Our own archive from 1991 to 2026, measured as each month's deviation from its own norm, shows very strong El Niño years running about one degree warmer and a third drier. In 2026 the phase is developing, so expect the rainy-day count closer to the El Niño column than to the average.

Dress for 15 degrees, not for the tropics

Evenings sit at 10–15 °C all year and homes have no heating. The rain makes that colder rather than warmer. A rain jacket beats an umbrella here because the wind turns umbrellas inside out, and gusts above 40 km/h are ordinary in the wet months.

Ride carefully or not at all on wet days

The passes around town are steep and the surface turns slick within minutes of the first rain. Most rental scooters here are underpowered for a wet descent with a passenger. If your route for the day is Tuyen Lam or the tea plantation, check the sky first — the trip is worth doing dry.

Monthly figures come from our own archive of daily observations for Da Lat, 1991–2026. Season boundaries shift by a couple of weeks from year to year.
