Where to buy a helmet in Da Lat

The helmet that comes with a rented bike is usually the cheapest shell on the market: thin plastic, a strap that slips, no certification sticker. It satisfies the police and nothing else. If you are here for more than a week and ride yourself, buy your own — four shops in town sell them, and a certified 3/4 helmet runs 480–750 thousand dong.

Two sit next to each other on Phan Boi Chau — you can compare them in ten minutes. Addresses are given the way the city knows them; the wards were renamed in the reform, the street and house numbers were not.

What to check before you pay

The conformity sticker at the back: without it the thing is headwear, not a helmet — and most of what the market sells is exactly that.
The buckle: a ratchet holds, velcro and a plastic click pop open on a bump.
Fit by your head, not by the picture: the helmet must not move when you shake your head.
A visor if you ride in the evening: with Da Lat fog and insects, your eyes water by the first pass.
Marketplaces are cheaper but you cannot try it on, and Vietnamese brands size differently.

The rental helmet is not your helmet The rental shop hands you a helmet because the law says so, not because it will protect you. A month of rental runs about 1.8M ₫ — your own helmet costs a third of that and stays yours. Renting for a couple of days, at least check the buckle and that it does not wobble.

The default way to get around. A month works out at about 1,800,000 ₫, and most rentals deliver the bike to your hotel for free.

Worth knowing. Da Lat is steep, foggy and often wet. Check the brakes before you take the bike, not after.

Careful. Film a 60-second walkaround of the bike before you touch it. Da Lat is a national hotspot for fake damage claims. Never hand over your passport — offer a cash deposit or a photocopy.

Vietnam recognises the 1968 Vienna Convention IDP, with an A or A1 motorcycle endorsement, carried together with your home licence.

Worth knowing. Since Jan 2025 A1 covers up to 125cc. Helmets are compulsory for rider and passenger: 400–600k₫ fine. Enforcement has visibly tightened.

Careful. IDPs issued under the 1949 Geneva Convention are NOT valid here — that covers the USA, Canada, Japan, Australia and China. Riding unlicensed voids your travel insurance, which costs far more than the fine.
