Living at 1,500 metres: what Da Lat's altitude does to the body
Da Lat sits a kilometre and a half above the sea — higher than any other Vietnamese town people move to for the long term. This is not the altitude where mountain sickness happens, but it is not nothing either: there is less air in your lungs, the sun is harsher, water boils sooner, and your first run will be slower than usual. Here is what actually changes, and what gets blamed on the altitude for no reason.

What the first days feel like
All of it passes within a few days and has far less to do with the altitude itself than with the change: you came up from zero to fifteen hundred metres in four hours of road.
- Breathlessness on a climb. Da Lat sits on hills, and a staircase you never noticed at home makes you stop here. It goes away within a week.
- A resting pulse a few beats above normal, and blood pressure slightly up as well. That is a normal answer to thinner air, not a reason to panic at the monitor.
- The first nights sleep worse. Usually it is the acclimatisation and an unfamiliar eighteen degrees in the bedroom rather than the altitude itself: breathing in sleep only starts to stutter — pauses, then deep breaths — above two thousand metres.
- You get thirsty more often. At altitude you breathe more, and every breath takes water with it — while the heat that usually reminds you to drink is absent here.
What changes if you stay
The body adjusts slowly and quietly. Haemoglobin in permanent residents rises with the altitude of the place — this was measured across the range from two hundred to two thousand metres, and the relationship is linear. It is not a disease but a way of delivering the same oxygen at a lower pressure. And for those who live at such a height permanently, the statistics look rather good. Switzerland compared the whole country, from 259 to 1,960 metres above the sea: the higher people live, the less often they die of heart and vascular disease. Per thousand metres of elevation, mortality from coronary heart disease is 22% lower and from stroke 12% lower. Work in Austria and Greece pointed the same way, and the explanation is not the air alone: people higher up move more and weigh less. Moving to the mountains is not a treatment, but there is no reason to fear the altitude as such either.
Sport: running feels harder at first
Fifteen hundred metres is the mark where the ceiling of endurance starts to fall — how much oxygen the body can take up at maximum effort. Above that it drops by about a tenth for every further thousand metres. At Da Lat's own altitude the loss is small, but it is there and a heart-rate monitor shows it at once.
- For the first fortnight hold your usual heart rate rather than your usual pace: at the same heart rate you will ride and run slower, and that is correct.
- Strength work and stretching suffer least — altitude barely touches them.
- The reverse shows when you go back down to the sea: the first days at the coast feel noticeably easier. That is exactly what altitude training camps are built on.
- The terrain matters more than the air. Every road out is climbs and descents, and it is those, not the thin air, that eat your strength on a walk.
Kitchen and home: water boils at 95 degrees
The boiling point drops by about a degree every three hundred metres. Five degrees sounds like nothing, but in the kitchen you notice.
- Anything boiled takes longer: eggs, pasta, pulses, bones for stock. Judge by the food rather than by the minutes in the recipe.
- A pressure cooker gives the lost degrees back and is more useful here than on the plain.
- Baking behaves differently: dough rises faster and collapses more readily. Recipes usually start giving altitude corrections from a thousand metres up.
- Tea and coffee are brewed with water that was never at a hundred degrees. For green tea that is rather a plus; for espresso it makes no difference, since the machine has its own pressure.
The town sits at 1,500 metres; Lien Khuong airport is lower, at 962. The physiology of moderate altitude comes from reviews covering the 1,000–2,500 m range: blood saturation falls by less than two per cent, haemoglobin rises linearly from 200 to 2,000 m, and peak oxygen uptake drops by roughly a tenth per thousand metres above 1,500. The mortality figures are from the Swiss National Cohort, 1990–2000, ages 40–84, altitudes 259 to 1,960 m. The rise of ultraviolet with elevation is the WHO estimate of 10–12% per thousand metres.
